Luis’ gets double rewarded this week. Today is his birthday; and tomorrow is Christmas. Oh boy, oh boy! What an exciting day, night and morning for Luis. He got a piece of ham for his birthday. And this evening, we celebrate with some canned foods for the dogs and the cats. Then they all have to go to bed, so Santa can visit our house tonight. And then our birthday boy will have a present under the tree, tomorrow morning.
I wanted to do a little Autumn photo session with Lexi, today. It’s her 14th birthday. But instead of being a well behaved Sheltie, Lexi decided it is more fun to run in circles and roll around in the Autumn foliage. She seems to get more stuck in her ways, at her old age. And that girl can run, when she sees the camera. Where is she still getting all this energy? I guess, competing with Luis, who gets the bigger milk bone and drinking plenty of water (which makes her pee in the house every so often), keeps this 98 doggy-year old lady alive. 😀
Happy 14th Birthday, Lexi!
Damn, it is hot! The last few days, we had temperatures of 106ºF (41ºC) here in the northern part of the DFW Metroplex. The next few days suppose to reach 108/109ºF (42/43ºC), before we get a break and hopefully some rain. Every night, when I water my home garden I also refill the bird baths. One of them, I put lower to the ground. The bunnies and other critters need water in this heat, too. My pets are “lazy” all day, and they won’t move a muscle until 7 PM. When I tell Lexi and Luis to go for a short potty break outside, they look at me as I had stolen their milk bones. Lexi goes in our bedroom, while Luis cools off on our leather couch.
*Original meaning behind “The Dog Days of Summer”:
When Sirius (the brightest star in the constellation Canis Major/Greater Dog, therefore called “The Dog Star”, rises with the Sun on those hot Summer mornings, we call the days from early July until the End of September “The Dog Days of Summer”.
This morning Kevin mowed the lawn, before the girls could play in the sprinklers. Katelynn got bored with it a little bit. She rather sat next to me and talked about her transition from Middle School to High School. Sara couldn’t get enough of jumping back and forth in the sprinkling water. While Sara played in the cool wet, Kevin and I were discussing what we have for dinner tonight. We decided on grilled chicken with potato salad.
Kevin got the grill ready and heated up; Katelynn went inside to play her computer game for a little bit; Sara tried off with her towels; and I watched the dogs rolling around in the grass. Lexi and Luis were staying close to Kevin, when he was tending the grill. Man, that chicken meat smelled so good. Of course, the dogs noticed it as well. Lexi looked at Kevin: “Daddy, are you dropping something for us, soon? My mouth is watering from this good smell!” They got a better and more healthier treat, once we all went back inside. Hmmm! The chicken and salad taste so good on this beautiful, sunny Spring Sunday.
Luis couldn’t wait to go back outside and enjoy the warm weather, yesterday afternoon. After all this rain, he was tired to sit in the house watching Mrs. Rabbit nibble on grass blades all by herself in the backyard. Luis rolled in the grass and put his face towards the warm rays of the Sun. Oh, he is soooo ready for Spring.
The Chinese New Year begins in China on February 16th, on the second New Moon of 2018. Here in the western hemisphere we still have the 15th, while China is celebrating the Year of the Dog. There are twelve zodiacs. Each zodiac is for approximately one year. Therefore a zodiac repeats itself every twelve years. Next time we have a Dog year will be in 2030.
Happy Chinese New Year!
Happy Year of The Dog!
Since the day we adopted Luis, our dog and Mrs. Rabbit have a special bond. Luis loved to chase Mrs. Rabbit through our whole backyard. And they both were fast. As soon as Luis saw her in the yard, he leaped halfway across the deck. But Mrs. Rabbit was fast enough to escape through one of the holes in the fence. Back then I thought, he wanted to catch and hurt her.
One day in Autumn 2016, I noticed something interesting: Luis and Mrs. Rabbit were running across the yard again, when Luis lost interest all of a sudden. He had to go and do #2. While he sniffed out an area to do his business, Mrs. Rabbit stopped running. Okay, that still looks normal. But then she turned around and hopped back to Luis. She sat maybe a foot and a half away and waited patiently for him. In the meantime she nibbled on some grass, until Luis was done. They looked at each other for a moment, as she would ask him: “Are you ready?” “Yep! I’m ready to play!” And the chasing game began all over again.
Since that day Mrs. Rabbit comes close to the patio door and waits for Luis to come outside in the morning. Luis seems not to chase her as much, lately. And Mrs. Rabbit looks a little bit bigger. She might be pregnant. Luis is a good pup and gives Mrs. Rabbit a break for now. And I can’t wait to see baby bunnies hopping all over our backyard, again.
The weather is perfect to sit in the backyard. When I opened the patio door to walk out, two furry heads peeked up from the couch. Luis and Chewbacca looked at me: “Can we come outside with you?” “Of course, you can play outside. Come on, let’s go!”, I replied to them. Off they hopped from the couch. Luis ran out first, and Chewbacca followed right behind him. Luis rolled around in the “dead” grass, while Chewbacca watched a leaf falls to the ground. The rays of the Autumn sun makes them both feel good.
Chewbacca chases a grasshopper in the Autumn foliage, while Luis “talks” to his buddy two fences down across the alley. After the grasshopper escaped from the cat, Chewbacca comes back to rub his fur against Luis: “Hey, what were you two talking about?” “The usual conversation: sleep, eat, poop, chasing a wabbit … He ate his owner’s shoe this morning”, Luis replies. “Dogs are weird!” Chewbacca noticed. Luis looks at Chewbacca: “Hahaha! Says the one, who sits on top of the roof and licks his butt for the whole neighborhood to watch it!” “You do, too!!!” “Yeah, but not on top of the roof, buddy.” … Yeah, they are really an odd couple. But as their Momma, I wouldn’t want it any other way. 😉
